San Francisco neighborhood

Five roommates, one front door, and a lot of keys

The big Victorians along the Panhandle and up the hill in Cole Valley were built for one family. Today most hold three, four, sometimes six people who each want their own room to lock and nobody wants to be the one who copies keys for everyone. That is our Haight work, more than anywhere else in the city.

A lock on every bedroom door

The most common request in 94117: a real keyed lock on a bedroom door, so a roommate's room is theirs. We fit privacy and keyed locks to interior doors that were never meant to have them, including the tall old doors with the original brass hardware, and we do it without wrecking the door.

For the front door, more and more shared houses switch to a keypad. Every roommate gets a code, a code gets deleted when someone moves out, and nobody has to meet the new person at a hardware store to copy a key. We install it, set the codes, and show the house how to change them.

The locks that came with the house

These houses also have the oldest locks in the city, and they fail the way old locks do: keys that turn stiffly, cylinders that spin, bolts that stick in summer. We service what can be serviced and replace what cannot, in hardware that fits the original door prep so the facade stays the way it was.

And someone in every shared house loses a key eventually. We open bedroom doors and front doors without damage, and rekey when the lost key is a risk rather than an inconvenience.

How the price works

Bedroom door locks are priced per door, and the hardware is modest. A front door keypad is priced by the model plus fitting. Both are said before we start.

Free on-site estimate on most jobs, and the final price is said before any work starts. You can still say no.

Questions from the Haight

Can you put a lock on my bedroom door without damaging it?
Yes. We fit keyed locks to interior doors, including old Victorian doors, and keep the original look where we can.
A roommate moved out and kept the key. What now?
Rekey the front door today. If the house has a keypad, delete their code. We do either on the same visit.
Can each roommate have a different code on the front door?
Yes. Most keypad locks hold many user codes. We set them up and show you how to add or remove one.
Does the landlord need to approve a bedroom lock?
Check your lease. Many allow it; some ask that the landlord gets a key. We can cut one for them while we are there.
