The key went in the water. Now what?

Linda Mar, Rockaway, Sharp Park: every beach in Pacifica has a parking lot, and every parking lot has had someone standing next to a locked car with wet hair and no key. We know the lots, we know the drive over the hill, and the new key gets made beside your car.

A surf key, so this never happens again

Here is the thing Pacifica surfers ask us for more than anything else: a plain metal key, cut to the door lock, with no chip inside. It opens the door and nothing more, so it cannot start the car. It goes in the wetsuit; the real key stays locked in the car. It costs a fraction of a replacement fob, and it takes a few minutes beside your car. If you surf here regularly and do not have one, call us next time you are at the lot.

When the real key is already gone, we do the full job: read the car, cut a blade to the door lock, program a new key or fob, test everything, for most makes, even with no key left.

Houses in the fog

Pacifica is wetter and saltier than almost anywhere else we work, and house locks suffer for it. Front doors, garage side doors and gates corrode from the inside out, and the first sign is a key that needs a push. We replace those with hardware that survives the coast, and we open the door without damage when the lock has already given up.

Lockouts in the fog, lost keys on the trail, a rekey after a move: the ordinary jobs happen here too, and the van comes over the hill for all of them.

How the price works

A surf key is priced like a simple metal key. A full replacement depends on the make, model and key type. Both are said before we start.

Free on-site estimate on most jobs, and the final price is said before any work starts. You can still say no.

Questions from Pacifica

How much is a surf key?
Little. It is a plain metal key cut to your door lock, with no electronics. Ask on the phone and you will get the number.
Can you come to the Linda Mar lot?
Yes. We come to any Pacifica beach lot and build the key next to your car.
Does the chip key still work if it got wet?
Sometimes, after it dries. If it does not, a replacement gets paired to the car on the spot and the wet one is retired.
My front door lock is stiff. Is it the salt?
Almost certainly. We replace it with hardware that handles coastal air, and show you a yearly maintenance step that helps.

At a Pacifica beach with no key?
